Built for Families Who Farm
Since 1949, Phelan Insurance Agency has worked alongside Ohio farm families. We know a family farm is not just a business. The equipment, the barns, the herd, and the land all carry decades of work, and they are expected to carry the next generation too.
Most agents quote a farm policy and check in again at renewal. We take a different approach.
We study how your operation runs, where it is headed, and what could put it at risk. Then we build coverage and a long-range risk plan around the way you actually farm.
CROP GROWERS
Corn & Soybean Growers
Your crop gets the headlines, but your operation is built on everything around it: the combine that has to run at harvest, the grain bins that hold your income, and the trucks that move it to market. A single loss at the wrong time can cost you a season.
We help crop growers protect the property and liability exposures that surround the crop, including:
Equipment
Tractors, combines, planters, sprayers, tillage tools, and drones, insured on a scheduled or blanket basis.
Grain Bins, Barns & Outbuildings
The structures that store and protect your harvest.
Farm Liability
Protection if your operation is responsible for someone else’s injury or property damage, including activity at harvest and on public roads.
Pollution Liability
Coverage for exposures from pesticide and herbicide application.
LIVESTOCK
Pigs, Beef & Dairy
Livestock operations carry some of the highest-value and most time-sensitive risks on any farm. Animals, buildings, and equipment all depend on each other, and when one is disrupted the effects ripple through the whole operation.
Hog Operations
Barns, feeding systems, and confinement buildings are the backbone of a swine operation.
We help protect those structures, the equipment inside them, and the liability that comes with manure handling and application.
Beef Cattle
From cow-calf herds to finishing operations, we help protect your barns, handling facilities, fencing, equipment, and livestock, with the option to insure herds on a blanket or scheduled basis.
We look at how your herd is managed through the seasons, from calving to market, so your coverage supports the whole cycle.
Dairy
Milking systems, cooling equipment, and parlors run on tight schedules.
Equipment breakdown coverage can respond to repair costs and spoilage when something fails, and liability protection helps cover exposures tied to milk hauling and farm traffic.
EQUINE & RANCH
Equine & Ranch Insurance
Horses and ranch land are a different kind of risk, and they deserve a different kind of conversation. Whether you breed, board, train, teach, or simply keep a few horses of your own, your exposures change with every person and animal on your property.
We design coverage for:
Horse Owners & Private Stables
Barns, tack, trailers, and equipment, plus liability for guests and visitors.
Boarding, Training & Lesson Operations
Liability tied to clients, students, and the care of horses that belong to others.
Breeding Operations
Protection for the structures, equipment, and activities that support your program.
Working Ranches
Barns, fencing, handling facilities, vehicles, and equipment spread across wide acreage, with liability coverage for ranch hands, visitors, and recreational activity on the property.
If you offer trail rides, events, or lessons, tell us up front. We will make sure your coverage is built for the way you actually use your property.
What Farm Insurance Covers
A family farm is part home, part business, and part inheritance, so a standard policy rarely fits. Farm insurance can be tailored to your operation, drawing on features of homeowners coverage for the house and commercial coverage for the barns, equipment, livestock, and liability that keep the farm running.
Dwelling
When the farmhouse is on the policy, it is usually covered at replacement cost or actual cash value, like a homeowners policy.
Barns & Outbuildings
Farm structures can be scheduled on your policy.
Farm Equipment
Tractors, combines, tools, and drones, on a blanket or scheduled basis.
Livestock
Insure animals on a blanket or scheduled basis.
Commercial Auto
For hauling grain or livestock on the road.
Farm Liability
Protection if you or your farm is responsible for someone else’s injuries or property damage.
Umbrella
Additional limits above your farm liability for the larger claims.
Equipment Breakdown
Can help cover repair costs, spoilage, and lost production.
FAQ
What does farm insurance cover?
Farm insurance can protect the farmhouse, barns and outbuildings, equipment, livestock, and the liability that comes with running an operation. It is flexible by design, so we tailor the policy to the way your farm actually works.
Do you offer crop insurance?
No. We are a property and casualty agency, so we do not write crop insurance. We help protect the property and liability exposures around your crop, such as equipment, grain bins, and farm liability, and we coordinate with your crop insurance provider so your overall program fits together.
How is farm insurance different from homeowners insurance?
A homeowners policy is built for a house. A farm policy can cover the house too, but it also addresses the barns, equipment, livestock, and business-style liability that come with farming. If you run an operation from your property, a homeowners policy alone will often leave coverage gaps.
Can I insure my farm equipment and livestock?
Yes. Equipment such as tractors, combines, tools, and drones can usually be insured on a blanket or scheduled basis. Livestock can also be insured on a blanket or scheduled basis, depending on the operation and the carrier.
I board horses and give lessons. Is that covered under a standard farm policy?
Not automatically. Boarding, training, and lessons add exposures that a basic farm or homeowners policy may not address, such as liability for clients and for horses in your care. Tell us how you use your property and we will build coverage around it.
Does my farm need an umbrella policy?
Most family farms benefit from one. An umbrella adds extra liability limits above your farm liability policy, which can matter when a serious injury or accident claim exceeds your base limits. We can review your exposures and help you decide what level of protection makes sense.
What about the equipment I haul on public roads or the grain I deliver?
Hauling grain or livestock on the road can create exposures that a farm policy does not fully address, and you may need commercial auto coverage. We will look at how you move product and equipment so your auto and farm coverage work together.
How does farm insurance fit into planning for the next generation?
Ownership changes, new operators, and shifting roles can all create coverage and liability gaps. We bring insurance into succession planning early, reviewing who is covered and in what role, so the next generation inherits a farm that is protected.
