For almost 30 years, Phelan Insurance has been picking up litter from a two-mile stretch of State Route 47 in Darke County. The company became involved with the Adopt-A-Highway organization in 1990 when they heard about the program from a friend. With 30-45 employees volunteering annually, we pick up litter four times a year to help make our community a more beautiful place to live.

As the biggest festival in our community, Poultry Days has been an event that Phelan Insurance has always been excited to volunteer for. From being in the parade to making and serving chicken dinners in the chicken dinner line, our team has loved to give their time to Poultry Days events. We know how much this festival means to Versailles and the surrounding communities, so we make it a priority to donate our time and effort to making Poultry Days a fun, successful experience for everyone.

During the spring every year, Phelan holds a coloring page contest for kids ages 12 and under to participate. We display all of the beautiful entries we receive around town and pick one winner from each age group to win an Easter basket full of treats! Seeing their drawings displayed prominently around town gives these children a sense of pride and accomplishment in their artwork. We love supporting the youth of our community by helping them grow and take pride in their work!

Each week, the Trinity Lutheran Church hosts the Versailles Community Meals program, where everyone in the community is invited to enjoy a homecooked meal prepared, served, and delivered by volunteers. The Phelan Insurance team has been volunteering to serve meals to the community several times a year for many years now.

Every year, our employees give donations to the local Adopt-A-Family program. By doing this, we are able to help an anonymous local family in need. We provide these families with essentials such as hats and gloves, winter coats, jeans, or pajamas, so they can give their children a nice Christmas with less worrying.

For the past few years, Phelan Insurance has offered a joint scholarship and internship award in memory of its owner, James B. Phelan, who died in 2015. The award is open to current college students who attended high school in the surrounding counties, have completed at least two years of college, and are majoring in the business or finance or accounting fields. Phelan Insurance has been dedicated to giving local college students the opportunity to achieve their goals, in loving memory, support, and appreciation of the late James “Jim” Phelan.
